Vases & Planters

Whether office, shop window, home windowsill or balcony, they are all enhanced by cut flowers, planted flowers and other potted plants. These decorative elements bring a touch of life and can be perfectly integrated into the ambience. An important aspect of decoration is choosing the right vases and bowls. Just like the frame for the picture, the vase and bowl for the plant is not only a container but also part of the effect. A harmonious concept can put each plant in an even better light and round off any decor. Here you will find numerous useful tips on choosing and caring for all the vessels for your plants.

Stylish decorating with vases and bowls

Plant bowls and vases offer numerous decoration possibilities. Outdoors, you can decorate excellently with plant bowls or even a floor vase. On balconies or terraces, plant bowls also find their place and bring a green summer atmosphere into every ambience. In the house itself, vases made of ceramic or glass can show off the cut flowers to their best advantage and enchant with their own decor. If vases made of hammered metal are used in the right place, they can also enhance the decoration.

Which vase should no household be without?

The types of vases depend primarily on the flowers they contain. It is advisable to own a few vases of each type in order to be able to place the desired decoration in all desired places. In addition to some standard vases, which have a relatively low and wide shape, there should be a few ball vases and tall vases in every household. Bottle vases round off the range. The decor of these vases should depend on the rooms in which they are used. For more serious occasions, it is also useful to have a vase in black in the household. A floor vase is also suitable for the entrance area as the first eye-catcher.

Which vases for which flowers?

The choice of the right vase should depend on the flower. For long-stemmed flowers such as tulips or tree branches, which are particularly popular in spring, you need a large vase that provides sufficient support for the stems. A spherical vase is suitable for expansive, full-bodied flowers such as dahlias or gerberas, as it allows the bouquet to spread out and cover a wide area. Wider vases are suitable for bouquets because they can hold them in shape. Lastly, there are bottle vases. These are especially used for single flowers or small arrangements.

Glass vases: How to show off tulips to their best advantage

Tulips are long-stemmed, shapely flowers that come in a variety of colours and require a tall vase. Since they are usually placed in the vase together with their leaves, they are best shown off in a glass vase. In addition, with a glass vase you can easily read the water level, because tulips need large amounts of water. A sufficiently tall tulip vase provides support, because this type of flower also grows in the vase and needs a little support to hold its head up until the end of its flowering.

Tips for the correct cleaning of vases

Proper cleaning is important for every flower vase, because flowers can only be shown off to their best advantage in clean vases. To avoid the growth of harmful bacteria, the inside of the vase must also be cleaned thoroughly. For vases with a large opening and a wide diameter, this can be done easily with a soft brush, a cloth and soapy water. Narrower vases need to be cleaned with appropriate hand tools such as a bottle brush or cleaning beads. Rice can also be used as a scrubbing aid. For stubborn stains, tooth-cleaning tablets or baking soda can provide the necessary penetrating power, while vinegar essence helps with calcification. In any case, you should have a little patience and enough caution so that the vase can soon shine again.

Advantages of vases and planters

Both vases and planters bring some advantages that make them great decorative tools. Vases impress with their versatility, because depending on the season, the flowers displayed in them can be changed at will and very easily. Many flowers are also more suitable for cutting and vase than for planting bowls. On the other hand, you can enjoy a planted flower for a long time and care for it. Apart from occasional watering, only a little fertilisation with fertiliser sticks is necessary.

From classic to modern: Wide range of materials

Plant bowls are usually made of thick ceramic or stoneware. Depending on preference, this can be glazed with different colours or present a matt, natural look. There are also bowls made of stainless steel or other metals. These bowls are hammered and polished to give them a noble appearance. Depending on the material and processing, a beautiful, noble patina can form. A plant bowl made of concrete or plastic can also be an eye-catcher.

The right planter for the right flower.

Flowers are ideal for planter bowls. They can stand on their own or be combined with each other if the bowl provides enough space. Pansies, petunias, midday flowers, sunflowers, purple bells, mock strawberries and golden nettles are just a small selection of possible plantings for the planter bowl in spring and summer. For the winter months, the decorative bowls can also be planted with perennial plants such as heather to enjoy some greenery even in the cold season.

The right choice of colour for plant bowls for a harmonious ambience

Metal plant bowls come in a wide range of elegant patina shades that blend in particularly well with a classic ambience. Ceramic bowls can either be kept in earthy tones and radiate a natural mood or be brightly coloured and eye-catching. Their colour, however, should harmonise with the blooms of the planted flowers or form a clear contrast.

Different shapes of planters

Plant bowls come in numerous shapes. If a planter is oval, it offers enough space for two plants placed next to each other. A round planter is particularly suitable for a single, space-consuming plant. If a planter is angular, it is particularly well suited for use on walls or as multiple side-by-side, bed-like decorative elements.

Guide to the correct planting of planters

Planting trays have a water drainage hole at the bottom. Place a clay shard on top of this hole to prevent soil from washing out. Fill drainage expanded clay into the container, place a fleece on top and fill the container with potting soil. Then form a sufficiently large hollow in the soil for the flower, whose root system you then cover with soil.

To stimulate root growth, do not water centrally, but at the edge of the planting tray. A little fertiliser, for example in the form of sticks, perfects the planting. When planting more than one type of flower, make sure that the plants get along with each other and create a harmonious picture.
